In Sorrento the Christmas period is rich in events, but the days before New Year are the most lively when the excitement for the new year and the long night of New Year’s Eve fills the air with exuberant expectation.
Among the not-to-be-missed events on December 30th, at the Chiesa dell’Annunziata, at 7.00 pm, “Presentimento” with Peppe Servillo and the Solis String Quartet, a reinterpretation of the classic Neapolitan repertoire in an original and innovative way, but always in respect of tradition.
 
The last day of the year is entirely dedicated to leisure and entertainment. It begins in the morning, dedicated to children with puppet shows, starting at 10.30 am. At 11.30 the Teatro Tasso will host the End of Year Concert performed by S.C.S. Sorrento Sinfonietta International Symphony Orchestra.
 
At 6 pm the traditional Ciuccio di Fuoco, is a moment of polar folklore that witnesses the lighting of a colourful papier-mâché donkey, a farewell to the past year and a propitiatory rite for the coming one. The real event, however, is like every year the New Year’s Party in Piazza Tasso, from 11.00 pm to 02.00 am with a DJ set and animation, to toast, dance, and welcome 2018, hoping that it brings joy and positivity.

Easter holidays in Sorrento

From Palm Sunday to Easter Monday the Sorrento Peninsula lives its most devout, passionate and involved period of time, which reveals this territory’s most spiritual aspect.

Easter is a magical time to enjoy the Sorrento area, to discover its traditions and enjoy the mild spring weather.

The branches of olive trees are coloured and decorated with hundreds of ribbons and delicious miniatures of local products, such as animal-shaped cheeses and tiny salami are proudly held by the boys. The girls, however, carry elegant baskets or small flower branches or traditional palms made of sugared almonds whose historical origin is mixed with legend and goes back to the Arab presence on the coasts of Campania. This explosion of colours and happiness is brought to church for the blessing of the palms, and so the Holy Week begins.

After the blessing, the cheering people gather in the street on the night between Thursday and Friday for a sorrowful yet suggestive celebration: the White Procession in Sorrento or the “Grieved” Procession in the neighbouring municipalities, which retraces the path of the Mother in search of the imprisoned and convicted Son. The brotherhoods of the entire Sorrento Peninsula prepare months in advance for this event, and the choirs of men, women, and children fill the streets and announce themselves in the distance to the devotees in the street or overlooking from the balconies.

The churches prepare the Sepulchres, charming flower beds and white wheat filaments. The children plant the seeds in small pots and keep them away from sunlight to prevent them from becoming green so that the tomb of Christ is as pure as their hearts. The rites, songs, prayers, fill the wait for the most important day, the day of Easter, the day of rebirth, and it seems that only on this day spring has finally begunPastiera. So the following day, Easter Monday, is dedicated to walks, visits to museums, day trips to the beach or mountains. And to taste the typical dishes of this holiday, the first of which the fragrant and delicious , a golden pastry pie filled with wheat, cream, ricotta cheese, citron and the wisdom of women which has been handed down for generations.
